American killed, 5 other seriously injured in a knife attack in London

An eyewitness named as Fernando, from Brazil, told Sky News he saw a Spanish family providing assistance to the victims, including a woman in her 60s who suffered a fatal stab wound to her back.

The five other people injured in the stabbing included both British, American, Israeli, and Australian citizens. No further details of the victims were immediately available.

So maybe this is a case of mental illness and not a terrorist attack. CNN reports London investigators are calling the attack a "spontaneous" assault.

"The safety of all Londoners is my number one priority and my heart goes out to the victims of the incident in Russell Square and their loved ones", said Khan. But after investigating through the night, police said there was no evidence that the attack was politically motivated.

The police said mental health was a "significant factor" in the wanton attack that took place in Russell Square, a busy area close to the British Museum where many hotels and restaurants popular with tourists are located. The man was reportedly tasered by police prior to being detained.

Two from the group remain in hospital, while the other three people have since been discharged, the force added.

He received treatment in a hospital and was then moved to police custody in south London.

Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley told reporters the one woman killed in the attack in central London's Russell Square late Wednesday was a United States national.
