He also said the U.S.is committed to a strong Europe, but he didn't say directly whether he prefers that the European Union stay intact.

"I believe that one clear goal should be this: We need the region and we need countries like Egypt and Tunisia that are close to Libya, we need a stable and unified Libya".

Trump however made clear he does not see a U.S. role in Libya, saying the country was over extended elsewhere.

US President Donald Trump said he was seeking a "balanced" and "reciprocal" trading partnership with Italy after meetings Thursday with Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni at the White House. In addition, he said this week that he would make "some very big changes" to the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico, or "we are going to get rid of [the agreement] for once and for all".

"I do not see a role in Libya", he said, speaking at a joint news conference with Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni.

Trump plans to attend a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meeting in Belgium next month before attending a summit of the Group of Seven major industrialized nations.

Gentiloni said that despite budgetary limitations, "the commitment has been made" to meet the target.

Does Trump keep his promises? Poll finds big shift in opinion

White House press secretary Sean Spicer also expressed confidence that there wouldn't be a shutdown, although the Office of Management and Budget had begun giving guidance Friday to federal departments and agencies about plans for a shutdown.

"Strong borders is a vital component", Trump said while alongside Gentiloni, whose country has been one of the most affected by the migrant crisis that has roiled Europe.

The U.S. president criticized Canadian policies related to a few industries including lumber, timber and energy, adding that officials will have to get to the negotiating table with Canada very quickly.

After a gunman killed a police officer on the Champs-Elysees, an attack the Islamic State has claimed responsibility for, Trump tweeted: "Another terrorist attack in Paris".

"The U.S. role in this is very critical", Gentiloni told a news conference standing alongside Trump. "We have to be strong and we have to be vigilant and I've been saying it for a long time".

"We have a number of visions that tie us together", he said.
