Liverpool forward Sadio Mane is set to undergo surgery on his injured left knee on Tuesday.

The Senegal worldwide sustained meniscus damage in his left knee during last weekend's Merseyside derby against Everton and it was initially hoped he could avoid surgery.

The Senegal international's damaged meniscus will be operated upon in London on Tuesday as he aims to be in contention for Liverpool's pre-season campaign.

"I will give my very best after yesterday's successful surgery to be back on the pitch as soon as possible and be even better than before", he told Liverpool's official website. "I'd like to say thank you to everyone".

The Reds will take on A-League side Sydney FC at ANZ Stadium on May 24, three days after their final Premier League game against Middlesbrough.

The 25-year-old, who moved to Anfield from Southampton for £30million last summer, is the club's top scorer having netted 13 times in the league in 27 appearances.

His absence during the Africa Cup of Nations illustrated just how much of an impact he has made during his debut season on Merseyside, with the Reds failing to win in the top-flight during his unavailability.

Until their hard-fought 2-1 win at Stoke last Saturday, Liverpool had not won in the four games in which Mane was absent.
