Strong thunderstorms forecast to bring tornado risk in South

In addition, the Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop for flights at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

The scattered nature of these storms will make it possible that a few could miss out on the rain or only see light amounts.

"This could be a very unsafe situation today as a widespread severe weather outbreak is expected to develop with long-track and strong tornadoes, damaging wind and very large hail", James said through the release.

Current weather conditions are similar to those that produced the 1998 tornadoes as well as the 1974 supercell that caused widespread tornadoes throughout the country. He says rain started in central Alabama around 4 a.m. and worked its way north reaching Birmingham about an hour later.

Data collected at the National Weather Service in Huntsville has revealed potential tornado threats for areas east of Interstate 65 on Wednesday.

The thunderstorms are likely to increase in coverage and intensity Thursday morning.

The second round will begin this afternoon as severe storms redevelop during the afternoon hours, according to the National Weather service.

"We are still taking cover and actively watching the storm", Poole said.

"It could be an all-day type of event", he said.

Elsewhere, Alabama's governor declared a state of emergency because of the threat, resulting in multiple school closings, and many schools in SC dismissed classes early.

Severe thunderstorms will be possible Wednesday afternoon and evening across Middle Tennessee. In addition, the University of Alabama has canceled classes on Wednesday and will cease normal operations at 3 a.m.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to push into the region Wednesday night, with the threat for severe weather Thursday.

A risky weather system packing severe thunderstorms was expected to roll through the U.S. Southeast and parts of the Midwest on Wednesday, bringing with it the threat of tornadoes, forecasters said.

Meteorologist John De Block said he expects storms to last into the evening in southern and eastern Alabama. As of now, the primary threat from these storms looks to be large hail and perhaps damaging winds.
