He has been charged with transporting a minor across state lines for criminal sexual intercourse, according to Jack Smith, the acting US attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee. Authorities credit the caretaker of a remote northern California property for helping police find her and arrest her alleged abductor, fired teacher Tad Cummins.

Cummins and the girl appeared to have been sleeping on a foam mattress on the ground in the small, one-room cabin, the Siskiyou Daily News reported. The girl has been reunited with her family.

During his time on the run Cummins traveled through nine states, intentionally disabled his vehicle's Global Positioning System, swapped license plates twice, used aliases and paid only with cash to try and evade capture, the motion stated.

Prosecutors argued Cummins posed a flight risk, saying he had tested out a run to Mexico on a watercraft he procured.

"Investigative efforts have revealed a troubling pattern of behavior by Tad Cummins, suggesting the 50-year-old may have been abusing his role as a teacher to groom this vulnerable young girl for some time in an effort to lure and potentially sexually exploit her", the agency said in a statewide Amber Alert issued the day after the girl disappeared.

Director of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Mark Gwyn announces the arrest of Cummins. "We'll make sure she'll get what therapy she needs and that she's safe, that she knows she's safe". "She put her hand over my shoulder and patted my back and said, 'It's okay, '" he recalled.

According to the investigative document, Cummins filled two prescriptions for erectile dysfunction medications before fleeing with the girl, and while on the run, purchased "commonly used lubricant for sexual intercourse". "It's really hard for her", sister-in-law Danielle Thomas said. They alleged in court documents that he "planned and executed an audacious scheme to take a juvenile victim across the United States while evading law enforcement for the purposes of engaging in criminal sexual conduct". The charge carries a minimum of prison term of 10 years and a maximum of life.

Since then, the two had been spotted at a Walmart in Oklahoma City - where according to a criminal complaint, Cummins made reservations at Super 8 motels in March.

"He's done this disgusting thing, that he has to pay for", she told NBC News.
