The 36th Annual Law Enforcement Officers' Memorial Ceremony honored the 143 officers who, since 1865, have given their lives while on duty. Among those killed were Columbus police officer Steven Smith, 54. Hundreds of officers from all over the state attended the ceremony at the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy in London, Ohio.

During the 44th annual Detroit Police Interfaith Memorial march, the department revealed a special patrol auto with decals of the names of fallen officers on the hood. A caparisoned horse, commonly known as the rider-less horse, was processed in by Deputy Joe Bruno, Commander of the Carson City Sheriff's Mounted Unit.

After families were escorted to their seats, the ceremony began.

Alongside Perez and Sandoval, Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell also spoke in support of law enforcement.

"We are the model for community policing in this country and I can say that with a lot of confidence", he said.
