In March of the same year, the Patna High Court directed CBI to investigate the scam.

Modi welcomed the Supreme Court's order like most of his party leaders, and said "There is no question of Nitish Kumar-led JD-U's alliance with the NDA".

He is already facing severe flak for contacting jailed gangster Mohd Shahabuddin. The charges were dropped by the Jharkhand High Court in 2014.

The high court had on November 14, 2014 upheld the CBI plea to continue proceedings in the trial court against Yadav under two sections while dropping other charges on the grounds that a person can not be tried twice for the same offence. "I want to ask Nitish Kumar on behalf of the BJP - will he institute criminal proceedings against Lalu?" and said it was a clear textbook case of "gross constitutional impropriety".

The duo surrendered to a CBI court in 2000. Lalu is now out on bail.

The "expos é" came as a big shot in the arms of BJP and Modi who has been carrying out a sustained campaign against Lalu and his family for amassing huge assets running into several thousand crore rupees.

The court charged Lalu with fraudulent withdrawals of Rs. 47 lakh from the treasuries at Banka and Bhagalpur districts where allegedly forged and fake bills were drawn by the Animal Husbandry Department in 1995-96 when Lalu was Bihar Chief Minister.

The Congress has been an old ally of RJD (both were allies in UPA till 2015) and has always been supportive of Lalu Prasad Yadav in spite of the latter's convictions in corruption cases.

Former TimesNow anchor Arnab Goswami on Saturday launched his new venture Republic TV with a predictably eyeball grabbing segment - what he claimed was exposé on the questionable relationship between Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and criminal-turned-politician Mohammad Shahabuddin.

The sentence had immediately led to his disqualification from Parliament and barred him from elections for 11 years.

He has also demanded that a case should be registered against Lalu and that he Bihar Government should move to the Supreme Court to cancel the former's bail in a fodder scam case, alleging that he is hand-in-glove with criminal elements of the state. The high court upheld the CBI plea to continue proceedings in the trial court against Lalu under two sections.
