Maryland bus crash injures 26 schoolchildren, 4 adults

According to Maryland State Police, there were 26 students and three chaperones onboard the bus.

Officers believed based on preliminary info that the children were from a school in Pennsylvania and were heading to Washington D.C. for a field trip, police spokesperson Greg Shipley told the Sun.

Havre de Grace Police have blocked access to southbound I-95 via the ramp from Route 155, and traffic is crawling in both directions on Route 155 - which leads from the interstate to US 40 in Havre de Grace.

One adult and one child were airlifted from the scene. No deaths have been reported. At least one other vehicle was involved, as well as a tree set back from the roadway.

Werner Coach president Heath Ochroch confirmed to NBC10 Philadelphia that the bus belongs to his company in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. "The bus then traveled off the righthand side of Interstate 95, struck an embankment, traveled down that embankment, struck a tree, snapping that tree in half, and then turning over on to its left side".

The University of Maryland Medical System officials said Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air and Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre de Grace accepted patients by ambulance. Police did not give details of the patients' conditions, but the Susquehanna Hose Company tweeted that two critically injured patients were flown to hospitals.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The accident happened about 9:30 a.m. ET on I-95 South near Cecil County about 40 miles north of Baltimore. - A tour bus from Chester County was involved in an accident on I-95.
