Nicky Hayden injured in 'serious' road accident

He is said to have suffered serious head and chest injuries. The Kentuckian was then transferred to hospital in Cesena further treatment and possible surgery, World Superbike reports.

Pictures of the Peugeot vehicle involved in the incident show substantial damage to the front windscreen.

"There are no substantial changes from what was communicated yesterday evening", said the statement.

According to a report from Rimini Today, Hayden was treated on-site and stabilized before being transferred to the local hospital, Ospedale Infermi Rimini, where he remains in a critical condition. He's receiving medical attention in Italy, and we must now be patient...

"More updates will come as soon as they are announced". Doctors say he is still too weak to be operated on.

Moyes then tellingly added: "I'm more concerned that I've now got others who are saying they are injured as well". He said: "I came here knowing exactly what the task was going to be".

He is now competing for Team Honda in the Superbike category, and took part in a race Monday at Italy's Imola track.

Messages of support for Hayden have poured in from the racing fraternity overnight.

British GP rider Cal Crutchlow added: "Really thinking of Nicky Hayden and his family at the moment".

Hayden's MotoGP championship victory in 2006 was a memorable one as he denied legendary racer Valentino Rossi a sixth consecutive world title in the series.
