"During the course of the last several weeks, I have met with the relevant senior career Department officials to discuss whether I should recuse myself from any matters arising from the campaigns for president of the United States", he said in his written recusal released on March 2.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has made no secret of his desire to revitalize the USA war on drugs, and new reports indicate he intends to begin by reinstituting harsher sentences for low-level offenders.

Sessions did not explain how recommending the dismissal of the person overseeing an investigation into the Trump campaign was consistent with his recusal from any matter involving the Trump campaign.

As Attorney General Jeff Sessions vets candidates to lead the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Justice Department won't say if he'll step away from any part of the hiring process, given his pledge to recuse himself from matters related to the 2016 campaign. On Tuesday night, when former FBI Director James Comey was sacked, Sessions also spoke with acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, who was Comey's number two and is under consideration as well, the DOJ official said.

Democrats on Capitol Hill have been raising alarms about the issue, with Senator Ron Wyden calling on Sessions to resign over the breach of the recusal pledge. While Trump questioned Comey's July announcement not to bring charges against Clinton, he later praised the former FBI director for briefly reopening his investigation just days before the November 8 election. In other words, that "lost confidence" happened about a week after Trump toured the nation praising Comey for having the "guts" to reopen the Clinton investigation.

In his statement, Franken said that Trump's reasoning for sacking Comey was "difficult to believe" and called for an independent investigator to examine Trump's ties to Russian Federation. Democratic Sen. Al Franken, of Minnesota, called Sessions' involvement a "complete betrayal" of his commitment, and Sen.

"If you are addicted to opiates, you'll get White House attention and increased treatment options", Miller said. Rosenstein also wrote a memo blasting Comey's handling of the email probe. Trump has said that scathing report factored into his decision to fire the director, though the president also said he would have done it regardless of the Justice Department's recommendation. To the contrary, when Van Susteren said she "really appreciated [Comey's] transparency", since "the American people wanted to know.what his opinion was and how he arrived at it", Sessions replied, "It's not him that has the problem".

"In terms of whether or not attorney general sessions should have a role, look, the FBI is doing a whole lot more than the Russian Federation investigation", Sanders said.
