Tesla will begin shipping solar roof tiles to United States of America customers in 2017, CEO Elon Musk said early Wednesday. This week, they got them. Bloomberg estimates that outfitting a 2,000 square foot house in NY with Tesla's solar roof would cost about $50,000. This is meant to ensure that homes have a uniform look without forcing homeowners to only purchase solar-capable roof tiles.

Installations are set to begin in the USA this summer and from 2018 elsewhere. While at that time, the carmaker didn't reveal any pricing or installation processes, CEO Elon Musk has just described the manner of ordering, as well as the pricing of these tiles.

The Tesla Solar Roof is created to complement a home's architecture while turning sunlight into electricity.

Tesla unveiled its solar shingles in October 2016 at a press event.

While you can make the order only on the glass tiles (glossy and matte), a stylized clay and stone options will appear in 2017.

"I think it will be great", the billionaire tweeted.

A federal tax credit drops that amount by almost $14,000, but Tesla's Powerwall battery adds a $7,000 expense. Solar and the ability to store energy has become one of the primary focuses of Tesla and is right up there with its electric vehicle aspirations.

It would cost $69,100 to install a solar roof with 40-percent solar tiles on a 2,600-square-foot roof in suburban Detroit, according to Tesla's web site.

If that wasn't exciting enough, the company also announced the surprisingly affordable price of the tiles - at US$21.85 per sq ft - as well as the fact they come with a warranty that lasts "the lifetime of your house, or infinity, whichever comes first". Buyers will want Tesla's roof, he said, because it looks as good or better than a normal roof. Production will start "very slowly", Musk told reporters on a conference call, adding he expects robust demand.
