Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has sent condolences to Senior Constable Forte's friends and family.

Police have declared an emergency situation in the Lockyer Valley.

Rick Charles Maddison, 40, who was wanted by police before Monday's incident, was pulled over for a traffic stop just after 2pm on Monday afternoon, when he fled in his vehicle.

I offer my support to the officers who are still in the field attempting to resolve this incredibly risky situation.

"At that point in time, he has fired at those police".

Southern Region Assistant Commissioner Tony Wright said Senior Constable Forte was a member of Toowoomba's tactical crime squad who had served in the Queensland Police Service for 15-and-a-half years.

"This is a stark reminder that our police officers, every day, literally, put their life on the line to protect us from mongrels like this", Mr Mander said.

"The police officer woke up this morning to do his job and he had people who loved him".

"Every day, the courageous officers of the Queensland Police Service put their lives on the line when they go to work, ' she said in a statement, with Police Minister Mark Ryan calling him 'a hero".

Other police officers at the scene of the shooting had been able to extract Senior Constable Forte and themselves.

Britain is still looking for other suspects in the May 22 bombing at an Ariana Grande concert that killed 22 people. In total, 17 warrants have also been issued mainly across Greater Manchester.


Police overnight were negotiating with a gunman holed up in a farm house.

On Monday, Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said his officers wanted to resolve the siege "as peacefully as humanly possible".

He said the incident again showed how "complex and unsafe the job of policing is in this state and our nation".

Police say they now have him "contained" on a property in Gatton.

Mr Forte was shot after intercepting a man police described as "wanted" about 14:20 local time (04:20 GMT) on Monday.

"He will never be forgotten".

Residents were told to run by police as the siege began yesterday afternoon.

One person was taken to nearby Toowoomba Hospital with shortness of breath.

An exclusion zone in place for the area of Fords Rd, Forestry Rd West, Sandy Creek Rd, Gerard Lane, 17 Mile, Wallers Rd and Forest Rd.
