To many Americans, Memorial Day has lost its meaning

In 2018, Memorial Day will fall on May 28.

But he doesn't mind people who treat the three-day weekend as a time to throw parties or hit the Boardwalk. Hats from each branch of the military were displayed at the fallen comrade table. The men at the post, including World War II veterans, work year round to honor and serve fallen and living veterans.

Veterans Day, on the other hand, was originally called Armistice Day, which commemorated the end of fighting in World War I - you may have heard before that it happened on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, in 1918.

Nearly, thirty years later, in 2000, Congress passed the National Moment of Remembrance Act, encouraging all citizens to pause for a minute of silence each year on Memorial Day to remember those who sacrificed their lives in all American military conflicts.

Legion members say they often get a big turnout for events like this, but when it comes to every day membership, the numbers have been dropping. Whether on the soil of the United States or lands far away, the sacrifice of those Americans play a role today in our existence, security and way of life.

U-S Senator Deb Fischer of Valentine calls Memorial Day a unique holiday because it pays tribute to the courageous men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice fighting for our country.

The best reports show at least 110 died of disease, 24 were killed in action, 13 died of wounds, one drowned in the MS and one was accidentally shot, and more than 500 Civil War veterans are buried in Porter County, Pazour said.

Numerous local communities observed Decoration Day prior to the Arlington event. In many homes this year, there will be empty seats at family picnics.

In many ways, it is the most meaningful of our secular federal holidays. MS celebrates Confederate Memorial Day on the last Monday of April, Alabama on the fourth Monday of April, and Georgia on April 26. However, something has been lost in the cultural environment that tied us more to veterans and those who died in service to their country. It's a time to honor their sacrifice by rededicating ourselves to the job of making this country worthy of these sacrifices-by cultivating the virtues of tolerance, engagement, respect and liberty that have made America great in the past-and will keep her great if we will honor and practice them now.

In Chapel Hill, Memorial Day commemorations will be held to honor service men and women, along with immigrants and refugees as victims of war.
