Trump tweets thanks to US service members

With their families in attendance, Trump told the stories of three service members killed in the war in Afghanistan, where he said they were fighting "enemies of all civilizations".

The president was accompanied to Arlington cemetery by Vice President Mike Pence, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as well as a slew of advisers and Cabinet secretaries, including veterans' chief David Shulkin and housing chief Ben Carson.

Before the president's speech, Dunford also addressed the crowd at Arlington Cemetery, thanking the men and women who have died in defense of our nation for their sacrifice.

Accompanied by Pence, Trump walked briefly among the white marble headstones and greeted families, including Brittany Jacobs and her 6-year-old son, Christian, who was dressed like a Marine. "While we can not know the extent of your pain, what we do know is that our gratitude to them and to you is boundless and undying-will always be there, Thank you", Trump said.

President Trump laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the final resting place for many US military members and others who have served the country, to mark Memorial Day. Bob Dole, who was severely wounded in action during World War II.

Trump added: "To the entire Kelly family, today, 300 million American hearts are joined together with you".

Once again, President Trump, after his successful nine-day trip overseas, did America proud, this time on the sacred US soil of Arlington National Cemetery. "If we truly want to give meaning to the sacrifice of those who gave all on our behalf, each of us will leave here today determined to find, in some small way, a method of serving our nation and our communities in their honor", he said. Elizabeth Dole, and other Gold Star families and service men and women in the audience.

Trump addressed Gold Star families, those that have lost loved service members: "They each had their own names, their own stories, their own handsome dreams".

Trump previewed the address Saturday before he flew home from Italy, the final stop on his first trip overseas since taking office.
