Damascus Urges UNSC to Condemn US-Led Coalition's Downing of Syrian Aircraft

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told Russian news agencies on Monday that the downing was akin to "helping the terrorists that the United States is fighting against". The ministry also called for condemnation of the coalition's actions.

From now on, all aircraft and drones of the coalition detected west of the Euphrates River will be tracked by Russian air- and ground-based air defense systems as targets, the ministry warned.

"The shooting down of a Syrian Air Force jet in Syria's airspace is a cynical violation of Syria's sovereignty". The Syrian jet was destroyed by the attack.

Adding to the new escalation of hostilities in the region was a statement from Tehran that it had launched multiple missiles against Islamic State-held positions in eastern Syria in retaliation for the terrorist attacks carried out by the group on Iran's parliament and a Shia shrine on June 7 in which 16 people were killed.

A few hours later, the Syrian SU-22 dropped bombs near SDF fighters and, "in collective self-defense of coalition-partnered forces", was immediately shot down by a U.S. F/A-18E Super Hornet, the Pentagon said.

"The U.S.' repeated combat operations under the guise of "combating terrorism" against the legitimate armed forces of a United Nations member-state are a flagrant violation of global law, in addition to being actual military aggression against the Syrian Arab Republic".

Trump may seek new climate accord
It has to be seen, the home minister added, in what circumstances the United States president made the statement on the Paris accord.

The United States and Russian Federation, which has been providing an air cover for Bashar Assad since 2015 in his offensive against the Daesh group, have a standing agreement that should prevent in-the-air incidents involving USA and Russian Federation jets engaged in operations in Syria. "That's why there's no threat of direct confrontation between Russian Federation and American aircraft".

USA forces tangled earlier this month with Syria-allied aircraft in the region.

Clashes between the Kurdish-led SDF and Syrian forces have been rare and some rebel groups have even accused them of coordinating on the battlefield.

A number of SDF forces were wounded in the attack, the statement from the Combined Joint Task Force said. Associated Press writers Nasser Karimi in Tehran and Jon Gambrell in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, contributed.
