"With respect to this subject, only the President or his attorneys are authorized to comment", Press Secretary Sean Spicer told the Daily Caller's Kaitlin Collins late Monday night. "I think he's considering perhaps terminating the special counsel", Ruddy said.

Newsmax founder Chris Ruddy's decision to say that President Trump is weighing firing special counsel Robert Mueller harmed Trump's ability to fire him, a Trump confidant told The Daily Caller.

"If Trump fires Mueller he won't have to worry about Congress cause We the People will demand his impeachment/yourfiredmrpresident!" he wrote.

"If there were good cause, I would consider it". Sessions is set to discuss the scope of his recusal from the Russian investigation, any meetings he had with Russian officials as a surrogate of the Trump campaign and the circumstances around the firing of FBI Director James Comey.

"Director Mueller is going to have the full degree of independence that he needs to conduct that investigation appropriately", Rosenstein said. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was asked about news reports suggesting Trump was mulling letting Mueller go, but said he has not seen evidence he has cause to fire Mueller.

Schiff told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" that if Trump fired Mueller, Congress might name its own independent counsel to investigate the case. After responding that he had not, Rosenstein reassured Shaheen of his confidence in the process.

Trump, according to The Times, has brought up the legal and political implications of firing Mueller, whom he reportedly thinks is "incapable of an impartial investigation".

Trump was apparently bothered by reports from conservative outlets like Breitbart News linking Mueller to Comey.

Conservative news outlets have been working hard to discredit Mueller in recent days, citing what Fox News' Sean Hannity called his "massive conflict of interest"-a friendship with fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey". "He had a private conversation with the President on his views about all sorts of matters, potentially about the investigation, I don't know".

Even so, Gingrich said, Trump won't seek to dismiss Mueller because he's confident the probe will conclude he's done nothing wrong.

The topic of both hearings is the Justice Department's budget.
