Donald Trump congratulates Leo Varadkar on appointment as Taoiseach

Reporters in the Oval Office said Mr Varadkar kept the United States president waiting on the phone for around 90 seconds before answering.

Mr. Trump also congratulated the taoiseach on his recent "great victory".

Both leaders said they look forward to meeting in person.

Mr Varadkar also held a call with the British Prime Minister, Theresa May, today where they talked about efforts to restore the Stormont Executive ahead of Thursday's deadline, and the agreement between the Tories and the DUP.

And the president invited the new Irish government leader to the traditional White House reception next St. Patrick's Day.

However, Independent.ie understands that there was no mention of the invitation issued by Enda Kenny for Mr Trump to visit Ireland.

Now, the admission of the two counts of fraud in 2012 and 2013 will see him pay an additional fine of nearly 780,000 euros. Mourinho left Real Madrid in 2013 to manage English club Chelsea for a second spell before signing with United in 2016.


The Taoiseach said numerous illegal Irish in the USA had originally travelled on legitimate documentation but for a variety of reasons now needed to regularise their situation.

The White House's daily press schedule confirms Mr Trump will speak to "Prime Minister Leo Varadkar of Ireland" at 11.15am US Eastern Standard Time, which is 4.15pm Irish time. I know so many of them, too.

"I will not, of course, rescind that invitation", he said, adding that to do so would be "inappropriate" and would create a "diplomatic incident".

Mr. Varadkar told RTE last February, that he "wouldn't be keen" on inviting Donald Trump to visit Ireland.

According to reports the pair spoke for fifteen minutes and discussed issues ranging from Brexit to climate change.
