Dufner, Lingmerth share lead

DANIEL Summerhays took a three-shot third-round lead at the Memorial tournament on Saturday as runaway overnight pacesetter Jason Dufner plummeted with an unexpected five-over-par 77.

Spieth, who finished with a share of second at Colonial Country Club in Texas on Sunday, teed off on 10 and followed three birdies in his first six holes with back-to-back bogeys.

The 40-year-old former US PGA champion, Dufner, who hit six birdies and an eagle, looked set to hold an outright first-round lead but his first bogey at the 18th left him tied with Lingmerth at Muirfield Village.

Rickie Fowler tees off on the 11th hole during the second round of the Memorial golf tournament, Friday, June 2, 2017, in Dublin, Ohio.

It was a day to forget for Dustin Johnson at the Memorial as the World No 1 shot a 74 on Friday to miss the cut.

Dufner had hit all 17 greens in regulation before falling short at the home hole. And then he three-putted the par-5 fifth for a fourth straight bogey.

The 2013 PGA Championship victor made only one bogey on Thursday, at the 18th, and made amends by holing out at 18 from 176 yards, sending his approach to the back of the green where the ball rolled back down the slope and into the cup for an eagle-two. He didn't make a birdie and shot 78.

Fellow Australian and playing partner Jason Day also salvaged a good second round after beginning his hometown event with a 75, grinding for a 71 on day two. I need another couple good rounds, but I feel good with my game.

Dufner asked five-time Memorial Tournament victor Tiger Woods (1999, 2000, 2001, 2009, 2012) and also leaned on Matt Kuchar who had won the Memorial Tournament earlier that spring. I didn't have much of a chance to stop the bunker shot unless it hit the pin and it dunked. More than his solid round was Dufner's collapse.

Summerhays made six birdies and three bogeys to get within five of the lead.

Dufner forged a 3-1-0 record as part of Team USA's 18.5-15.5 victory at Muirfield Village after using the wisdom of his teammates.

Round 3 "was pretty pathetic on all accounts, so have to play better" today, Dufner said. "But I'm more focused on my breathing and I'm at with that".

He was 3 over through four holes, answered with four birdies over his next five holes, then traded birdies and bogeys on the back nine until finishing with one last birdie for a round of 70 that featured just six pars.

"It's a tough golf course, definitely", Nordqvist said.
