This is the latest example of tension between the Russian-backed Syrian regime and USA -led coalition forces, who are partnering with Arab and Kurdish forces to destroy ISIS.

An initial attack by forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad occurred at 4:30 p.m. local time (9:30 a.m. ET), causing an unknown number of casualties and driving out SDF fighters, the coalition said in a statement.

US -led jets stopped the fighting by flying close to the ground and at low-speed in what is called a "show of force", the Pentagon said.

When a Syrian army SU-22 jet later dropped bombs near the US backed forces, it was immediately shot by a U.S. F/A-18E Super Hornet, the statement said.

Coalition aircraft conducted a "show of force" mission to stop Syrian forces from advancing and coalition officials contacted the Russians on the "de-confliction line' to calm the situation down, but almost two hours later a Syrian SU-22 dropped bombs on SDF fighters, according to Sunday's news release".

A Syrian army statement released on Syrian state television said the plane crashed and the pilot was missing.
