"In my opinion, we have to be very clear, very simple, very straightforward if we talk about Russian Federation, and with Russian Federation", he said.

He also said that the future the future of Romania and the country's relations with the United States is very bright.

Taking a few questions after the joint appearance, Donald Trump went beyond his earlier position of praising James Comey's testimony for the few Trump-friendly statements it contained and offered a summary of the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director's testimony that included things Comey never came close to saying.

Comey testified that it was Trump's May 12 Twitter post suggesting there were such tapes that prompted him to ask an intermediary to give a reporter copies of the memos he had been keeping of his interactions with the president.

Trump says that he never asked Comey for a pledge of loyalty and never told Comey he hoped the investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn would go away.

"I didn't say that", Trump insisted Friday, before heading to his New Jersey golf club in Bedminster where he will spend the weekend.

Trump was addressing reporters at the White House for the first time since Comey's explosive appearance, in which he branded the president a liar and said he believed he was sacked over his handling of the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe into Russian election meddling.

After the meeting, the two presidents held a common press conference in which Donald Trump praised Klaus Iohannis for leading the fight against corruption in Romania and for the country's efforts to increase its defense spending.

Trump concluded his team emerged "very happy" after Comey's testimony.

While Trump's staunchest supporters have tried to paint Comey's testimony as vindication for the president, few Republicans who don't work for Trump stepped in to defend the president's version of his contacts with Comey.

After Comey was sacked, Trump had tweeted, "James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!" But, she said, he was wrong to leak his notes to the public and should have given that document to her panel.
