Roger Williams, who was among those shot at a congressional baseball practice Wednesday morning, is expected to make a full recovery, the Austin Republican said.

Barth is a University of Texas graduate and Junior Legislative Correspondent for Congressman Williams.

Scalise was the lone Congressman shot, along with two Capitol Police officers and a Williams' staffer named Zack Barth, who was released from the hospital later in the day.

Rep. Marc Veasey, who practices in Washington on the Democrats' team, tweeted about the incident, as did Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

Williams said he dove into the concrete floor of the first-base dugout, which he described as being "like diving into a swimming pool without water".

Witnesses said a gunman fired a torrent of bullets at the ballfield around 7 a.m. Police identified the shooter as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson of IL, who was shot by Capitol Police officers and later died from his injuries. According to reports, the Capitol police returned fire on the gunman.

Williams, who is one of the coaches, said the Republican baseball team holds its practice every morning at 6:30 a.m.at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park in Alexandria, Virginia.

Brooks said he's "thankful" that Wenstrup, also an Iraq War veteran, was there to help Scalise.

"We're going to play, we need to play", Williams said.

Scalise was shot in the hip, but is in stable condition.

'We're trying to take care of [Jack], just trying to take care of each other, it was a lot heroes here today among my friends, ' he said.

US Capitol Police say they have "robust police presence" around the Capitol, but the building is still open after the shooting in Virginia.

Williams, who sprained his ankle protecting the young son of Rep Joe Barton, spoke of how he and his colleagues owed their lives to officers Krystal Griner and David Bailey's intervention Wednesday morning.

He said never thought he'd go to a baseball practice and "have to dodge bullets". "(Rep.) Jeff Flake took his belt off and made a tourniquet around Zach's leg to stop the bleeding.

Mr. Scalise was out of surgery and was in critical condition as of Wednesday afternoon, according to MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

Hodgkinson died from injuries sustained in a firefight with police.

"There was nowhere for me to go so I got on all fours and I saw him train his gun at me".

"We're blessed, but these Capitol Police saved all our lives".
