When elder abuse is not confined to home

"It's a serious problem because lots of our seniors are suffering emotional, financial, even physical abuse, but because of the culture, language barrier, they're not seeking help", Fion Lee, ASSIST executive director, said.

Close to one in six persons over age 60 years are abused. "The World Health Organization has estimated that the prevalence rate of elder abuse in high-or middle-income countries ranges from 2% to 14% of people usually defined as 'over the age of 60 or 65 years".

Most people have heard about child abuse, but elder abuse is discussed far less.

Examining elder abuse in the U.S. Chinese community sheds light on the potential cultural nuances of elder abuse. He said that in Vance County there are nearly 10,000 people who are over 60 years old.

Also during fiscal year 2014-15, Salavantis said, there were 24,413 reports of suspected abuse statewide, a 21.3 percent increase from the previous year.

"On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day it's more important than ever to repeat the message that fraud of our elderly is not acceptable - and that criminals won't get away with exploiting our parents and grandparents".

The research covered actual experiences of elders as they interact with people and service providers, their perceptions and general state of mind, and a list of expectations that society imposes upon them.

Another common case was family members taking advantage of superannuation and "help themselves to their pension" which neglected the elderly and "leaves no more money" to buy things such as warm clothes, Muralidharan said.

Older people often do not report abuse as they feel embarrassed or do not want to lose companionship, stop a service or deal with the consequences of saying no to family. "Are we showing them the proper respect?"

The elders' rights expert also stressed the need to be aware that intervention strategies which might be suitable for addressing the issue of domestic abuse were not suitable for managing violent relationships involving older persons.

The Seniors Protection Partnership (SPP) in Edmonton is receiving $30,000, which will go towards working with community groups such as ASSIST Community Services Centre to reach isolated seniors from multicultural communities.

"People, they do exploit the elderly, in South Canterbury elderly are especially vulnerable, just like when we talk about vulnerable children, it's just as significant", Muralidharan said.

"Elder abuse is a specific, distinct and deeply disturbing form of abuse".
