Leader of Opposition and YSR Congress president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy led his party MLAs in the polling process. Nine ballot boxes will reach Delhi on Monday while the rest will reach here on Tuesday as per schedule.

There are two candidates in the fray for the coveted post - National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Ram Nath Kovind and Opposition's candidate Meira Kumar. It will be only the second time that India has had a Dalit head of state.

"EC has permitted 14 RS members, 41 LS Members to vote in State legislative Assemblies instead in Parliament in Presidential Elections".

# Each MLA vote comes with a certain value that is calculated on the basis of population of the state.

The presidential polling was the highlight of the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament that saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaching four minutes before polling started to cast his vote. Her nomination, which followed Kovind's, was seen by many as the opposition's attempt to counter Modi's move to woo dalits.

The voting for the presidential election ended in the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly premises today with 228 legislators casting their votes.

The President is chosen by an electoral college comprising all the MPs and MLAs in the country, with weighted votes apportioned.

Every elected legislator will exercise his/her franchise to choose the country's next President. Then the special pens with violet ink will be given to the elector for marking the ballots, which would be in two colours - green for MPs and pink for MLAs.

"Before entering the voting chamber, a polling staff will collect personal pens from the voters and hand over the special pen to mark their vote on the ballot paper", an EC spokesperson said. A candidate needs 50 per cent-plus votes to win the poll. So the total number of votes for all the MPs in India is 5,49,408.

Out of the total electorate, as many as 1,581 MPs and MLAs accounting for 33 per cent have criminal cases against them, the analysis of their affidavits by the ADR and the NEW showed.

In terms of the value of the votes, the Sikkim Assembly has the lowest of seven and Uttar Pradesh the highest of 208.
