Late Friday afternoon, US president Donald Trump dropped a bombshell on social media by announcing the appointment of a new chief of staff - Department of Homeland Security (DHS) secretary John Kelly.

The shakeup was announced shortly after Air Force One landed at Joint Base Andrews, returning from a speech in Long Island, NY.

After frequent conversations with Kelly, Trump recently warmed up to the idea of naming Kelly chief of staff to more effectively manage personnel and offered it to him earlier this week, a senior White House official said.

"I can't think of a better person than General John Kelly to succeed me and I wish him God's blessings and great success", said Priebus. Trump praised the former Marine general as a "great American" and a "great leader".

Trump made the announcement on Twitter, naming Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly to fill the role.

Trump tweeted that Kelly "has been a true star of my administration".

Priebus's departure was nearly a foregone conclusion, especially after Trump's new White House communications director, Anthony Scarmucci, called Priebus a "f***ing paranoid schizophrenic" on Thursday and alluded to him being the one leaking information to journalists. Former press secretary Sean Spicer, one of Priebus' allies in the White House, left after Scaramucci's hiring.

But, speaking to CNN on Friday evening, Priebus said he and the president had been talking about his resignation for a few days and that he had formally resigned on Thursday, denying that Trump had asked him to step down. "I'm on Team Trump and I look forward to helping him achieve his goals and his agenda for the American people".

Pence also congratulated Kelly, writing, "I know you will do a great job!" "Reince is a good man".

This would not be Nielsen's first time working in the White House.

Elaine Duke, the deputy secretary of Homeland security will become the acting head of the department. He then was tapped as White House Chief of Staff, despite some concerns from some Trump backers, who saw Priebus as too much of the GOP Establishment.

"I think General Secretary Kelly will bring some strength and discipline, and put out, without even saying to others, that loose lips sink ships", Conway, counselor to the president, told Fox News' "Fox & Friends".

At one point during the call, Mr Scaramucci called Mr Priebus a "f***ing paranoid schizophrenic". It's not that surprising when you consider how Trump generally treated Priebus.

Priebus previously served as the chairman of the Republican National Committee.

Scaramucci told CNN's New Day that officials sometimes "leak things to reporters to help shape policy".

"I think we've still got a good relationship".
