Ashwani Lohani, who heads national carrier Air India, will take over as the new Chairman of the Railway Board after the resignation of its current chief AK Mittal in the shadow of several train crashes.

Like his appointment in Air India, Lohani is coming back to the Railways at a critical time when accidents are a recurring theme.

An officer of the railway mechanical service who had earlier served as the divisional railway manager in Delhi, Lohani was also the India Tourism Development Corporation chairman and headed the Rail Museum in the Capital. Lohani takes over from A.K. Mittal, whose resignation was accepted by railway minister Suresh Prabhu. "I met the Hon'ble Prime Minister @narendramodi taking full moral responsibility", Prabhu said in a tweet.

In a series of tweets, Prabhu said that he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the wake of the accidents and tendered his resignation.

Seventy people were seriously injured when nine coaches of the Kaifiyat Express derailed near Auriaya in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh Wednesday morning when it collided with a dumper plying on the road adjacent to the tracks. As many as 74 passengers were injured in the train accident.

"I am extremely pained by the unfortunate accidents, injuries to the passengers and the loss of precious lives". Prabhu said that in the last three years, he has worked day and night to improve the condition of the country's railways.

"Will not allow laxity in operations by the Board".

Notably, Lohani also has his name in the Guinness Book of World Record for successfully running the world's oldest working steam locomotive "Fairy Queen Express".

"Orders promoting me as Chairman, Railway Board have been issued today". Mittal was facing flak after the Utkal Express derailment in Muzaffarnagar on Saturday. Back then, the general managers of the Central and South Eastern Railways were removed from their posts only to be rehabilitated in some other division as general managers in a few days.
