45 in the world, won 6-3, 6-1. Light rain began falling earlier Tuesday, and although play was able to continue for some time as umbrellas popped up, it was eventually suspended, and players were sent back to the locker room.

She almost upended Keys in the U.S. Open's third round past year, leading 5-1 in the third set before losing in a tiebreaker, a collapse on her mind in the latter stages Tuesday.

The German's 6-3 6-1 defeat makes her only the second defending women's champion to lose her first match after Svetlana Kuznetsova in 2005.

Defending champion Angelique Kerber's woeful season continued with a first-round loss to 19-year-old Naomi Osaka at the US Open. "I got the break back and after that, everything changed".

The signs are that it should be a quick afternoon's work for the 31-year-old Spaniard, who dropped just four games in the pair's only other meeting at the 2014 French Open.

This year, she fell in the first round of the French Open, that first time that had ever happened to the women's No. 1 seed in that tournament.

Osaka, who surrendered a 5-1 final-set lead on the same court in losing to Madison Keys in the third round 12 months ago, fired 22 winners as Kerber went tumbling out of the world's top 10 as well as the tournament.

Kim Wall: Headless body identified as missing journalist
Wall was to embark on a brief ride on August 10 for a profile about the 46-year-old Madsen, according to The Associated Press. This grisly discovery of a torso without a head, arms, or legs, was traced to Kim Wall , 30, through the use of DNA matching.

She led Madison Keys 5-1 in the deciding set of their third-round clash on Ashe previous year only to lose in a deciding tie-break.

Kerber then took the same court where she beat Pliskova for the title previous year and took another stinging defeat in what has been a season-long slump since winning her second Grand Slam title. Kerber hasn't won a title since she won in NY in 2016.

"Moving forward, I feel like I know that I can play with the top players now, so I don't have to be as nervous as I was today", she said in a warning to her next opponent, Swedish qualifier Rebecca Peterson or Czech Denisa Allertova. It was later announced all matches outside of Arthur Ashe Stadium were canceled for the day.

Federer defeated the world number 70 in straight sets in Miami this year but Tiafoe, the son of a Sierra Leone immigrant, illustrated his growing reputation by seeing off world number six Alexander Zverev in Cincinnati.

World No.1 and top seed Karolina Pliskova hit eight aces and 29 winners en route to an impressive 6-2, 6-1 win over world No. 72 Magda Linette in her opening-round match.

Juan Martin del Potro, the 2009 champion in NY, starts against Switzerland's Henri Laaksonen.
