World's oldest man Yisrael Kristal dies aged 113

Last year, he celebrated his bar mitzvah, a century late.

Yisrael Kristal, a survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp and recognized previous year by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest living man, died in Israel on Friday.

For his 113th birthday previous year, Kristal celebrated with an official bar mitzvah ceremony, which he had never received at the traditional age of thirteen.

Kristal was born in Zhernov (Żarnów) Poland in 1903. Kristal is survived by two children, multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren, according to Guinness.

His two children died there and Mr Kristal and his wife Chaja Feige Frucht were sent to Auschwitz in 1944 after the ghetto was liquidated.

Guinness World Records awarded Kristal a certificate as the world's oldest man a year ago.

He told Guinness there's no secret to living a long life. Kristal, however, managed to survive, performing slave labor.

"I believe that everything is determined from above and we shall never know the reasons why", Kristal said. "All that is left for us to do is to keep on working as hard as we can and rebuild what is lost". Kristal was deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp, where he was near-death and weighed about 82 pounds by the camp's liberation in 1945. In 2016, when he turned 113, Krista chose to mark a special event- his bar mitzvah- a century late.

However he married again to Batsheva after the war and emigrated to Israel with his family in 1950. The world's oldest person is a woman, however: Jamaican Violet Brown is 117.
