Bulls Suspend Bobby Portis Eight Games After Scuffle with Nikola Mirotic

The incident allegedly occurred when Portis and Mirotic got into a shoving match during practice that ended with a cheap shot by Portis to the face of the 26-year-old.

Portis was suspended eight games by the team, per K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune.

Before the incident, Mirotic was likely to be the Bulls' leading scorer in 2017-18, not because the career 10.8 points-per-game scorer was ready to elevate his game, but because the Bulls are that awful thanks to a series of bewildering trades ostensibly created to rebuild the franchise that instead yielded startlingly unimpressive hauls. Mirotic charged at Portis twice before Portis threw a punch and connected with Mirotic's face, league sources said.

"Bobby Portis is not a bad person", Bulls president of basketball operations John Paxson said. "He's a good kid, but he made a mistake".

He and Mirotic are expected to play key roles for a franchise looking to bounce back from a disappointing first-round playoff exit at the hands of the Boston Celtics, who erased a 2-0 deficit and won four straight to eliminate the Bulls. He will likely need surgery, according to the team. Portis was a first-round pick in 2015, and has averaged 6.9 points and five rebounds per game. Mirotic was hospitalized with a concussion and facial fractures.

Portis will serve the suspension beginning with the Bulls' season opener at Toronto on Thursday night. He signed a two-year deal with $12.5 million guaranteed this season to stay in Chicago.
