The Congress has given both Mr Patel and Mr Mevani an open invitation to join the party.

He said that Rahul will attend his rally on 23 October when he along with his supporters will join the Congress party. "It's the time of elections, we will not let Congress take victory in Gujarat", Varun Patel told ANI. "The Congress invites them to join hands with us", said Gujarat Pradesh Congress committee president Bharatsinh Solanki at a press conference. "I hope that the Patidar agitation leader Hardik will also join us", Solanki said after the meeting with Mr. Gandhi.

Earlier in the day, the battle for Gujarat seemed to be tilting in favour of the Congress as the party had managed to stitch up a mega front against the BJP comprising all the three influential community leaders - Hardik Patel of Patedar community, Gujarat's Dalit face Jignesh Mevani and OBC leader Alpesh Thakor. The Congress says that it is confident of bagging the support of Patel.

Solanki even promised to give an additional 20 per cent reservation to economically backward classes in the state if the Congress is voted to power in the upcoming assembly polls. The state will go to polls later this year.

To this, Kalsaria, the seniormost AAP leader in the state, said: "I am looking to fight from Mahuva seat as an Independent and get the Congress to leave that seat for me".

Key Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) leaders Varun Patel and Reshma Patel joined the BJP on Saturday in the presence of Deputy CM Nitin Patel, Minister of State for Home Pradeepsinh Jadeja and state BJP chief Jitu Vaghani.

Alpesh Thakur joined the party assuring that Hardik will be working with the Congress to defeat BJP. Technically, Hardik Patel can not contest elections as he is underage. According to Deccan Chronicle, Vasava had supported Congress in the Rajya Sabha elections held in August. The sources said the BJP would rely on a similar plank in Karnataka where Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who himself hails from a backward caste (Kuruba), of the Congress is relying on a coalition of OBCs, Dalits and minorities to win a second term. The Patidar community leader said that it was time for a BJP-mukt Gujarat.

"Chhotu Vasava (JD-U MLA) had supported Congress in the Rajya Sabha election".
