Microsoft is acquiring virtual-reality social networking startup AltspaceVR for an undisclosed amount. You can preorder your Windows Mixed Reality headsets at Microsoft Store and Microsoft.com. Halo: Recruit will be available as a free download. The headset, whose visor shows computer-generated images projected onto objects in the wearer's environment without obscuring the view of the real world completely, was subsequently offered for sale to developers and businesses.

The firm uses the term "mixed reality" to refer to both VR experiences, which are based exclusively in computer-generated worlds, as well as AR, which mixes graphics and real-world views together. The Odyssey is Samsung's play at the premium category, and it has a price tag to match-$499, same as the Rift.

The Samsung HMD Odyssey comes with integrated AKG headphones and array mics for voice commands, as well as two motion controllers.

"The launch of all of those head mounted displays will create a lot of competition and possibly price aggressiveness in this space in the coming holiday season", Annette Zimmermann from the consultancy Gartner told the BBC.
