Christmas tree prices up amid shortage this holiday season

At Erway's Christmas Tree Adventure in Wilson, they're harvesting their locally grown Christmas Trees.

Now, Macklin doesn't know if they'll have enough trees to maintain a wide variety as Christmas gets closer.

It's a tradition here in Southwest Louisiana: shopping for Christmas trees the day after Thanksgiving.

New said while his customers are a little disappointed this year with only precut trees available, they're adapting to the change and still returning.

The National Christmas Tree Association believes the problem stems back to Great Recession, when less people were buying Christmas trees.

"Seeing families together enjoying being outside", he says, "looking through the trees".

North Carolina trees nabbed a higher wholesale price this year.

At larger local tree farms like pioneer trails tree farm, the shortage hasn't made much of an impact.

She said it takes about 10 years to grow an average size tree. It's a family tradition that they do every year, but it's their first time doing it at Pepper.

"We always turn the lights off anytime that we're not home and we actually turn the heat down in the room that we have tree in, especially when were not home".

"We plant in the spring, March or April usually", he said.

Christmas trees were in short supply past year, too, but the shortage didn't catch any media attention, Hundley said.

There aren't any good statistics on how many Christmas tree farmers have turned to cannabis.

Schmitt recommends people buy their trees early, before supply runs out. "We have a fire going in the gift shop", Collins said.

He's been growing and selling them for 34 years.

"This is what we do", Patterson said. At the Capitol Market in Charleston fresh pine filled the air as tree sellers were stocked up.
