Cleveland hosts annual Veterans Day parade

A Veterans Day parade will begin at Longfellow Square and proceed down Congress Street to City Hall starting at 10:30 a.m., with a wreath-laying ceremony at City Hall at 11 a.m., hosted by the Harold T. Andrews Post 17, American Legion.

The city of Sacramento holds its annual parade beginning at 11 a.m. The park is located at the former West End Park on Columbia Street, which will be closed from 2-6 p.m.

The Kenosha Area Vietnam Veterans are gathering at noon in Library Park, 711 59th Place, for a ceremony. Stephen Doyle, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 832 South Portland; Capt. Michael Baroody of the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Northern New England; Mayor Patricia Smith and City Clerk Emily Scully.

Since Veterans Day is on a Saturday this year, many events are being held on Friday - with some continuing throughout the weekend.

According to, Veterans Day originated as Armistice Day on November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and November 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938.

During the ceremony, Walter Eugene Lowrey has honored as the 2017 Distinguished Veteran and the parade's grand marshal. The parade starts at 10 a.m. and will be led by retired Navy Rear Adm. William Copeland Jr.
