Trooper Joe Hovis with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said, "We will be beefing up our troopers and looking for people who are texting and driving".

"There's studies that show distracted driving and sleepy driving can be just as unsafe as impaired driving", Collins said.

During the Thanksgiving weekend a year ago, 11 people were killed in crashes on IL roads; more than half of those occupants were not wearing their seat belts, according to a press release.

The I-40 Challenge will consist of increased patrols along the interstate from Wednesday, Nov. 22 to Sunday, Nov. 26.

The objective of these operations is to promote safety and reduce traffic crashes.

The challenge has NC, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California placing troopers at least every 20 miles on I-40 from Wednesday to Sunday during the most heavily-traveled periods. State Troopers were at visitor centers in our area Wednesday talking to drivers.

Enforcement efforts on secondary roads within Troop D will be conducted during the same timeframe. It will last throughout the holiday weekend. Troopers will also be available to help motorists in need of assistance. "It's $25, but what we're concerned about is you getting to where you're going alive and safe", Collins said.
