Suspect captured in killing of University of Utah student, police say

One person is dead and the University of Utah has issued a lockdown after a shooting near the Salt Lake City campus.

The Deseret News reports that the university sent an alert at 9 pm to students and staff to take shelter and remain inside campus.

Salt Lake City Police Sgt Brandon Shearer said officers were not immediately releasing the victim's gender or other details.

Commuter train services were suspended near the school, local media reported. Police swarmed rugged mountain foothills near the University of Utah Tuesday, Oct. 31, searching for Austin Boutain, suspected of killing Guo while on the run after another homicide in Colorado. The couple also were wanted for questioning in connection to the death of a man several days ago in Golden, Colo., according to University of Utah Police Chief Dale Brophy.

Both Austin Boutain and his wife, Kathleen, are in custody, police said.

Lori McDonald, the University of Utah's dean of students, said Guo served as a peer adviser to help other global students find their bearings on campus and described him as "extremely outgoing, charming, creative, smart". He was studying computer science in his first year at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.

Tam said Guo also wowed his friends on the dance floor with hip hop moves.

The University of Utah campus is eerily quiet this Halloween day.
