The Texas Department of Public Safety said in social media posts late Thursday that Allen initiated a traffic stop shortly before 4 p.m. on Interstate 45 near Fairfield, about 90 miles (145 kilometers) south of Dallas.

Once the investigation is complete, it'll all be turned over to the local district attorney, but right now the primary focus is taking care of the scene, taking care of the family Trooper Haschel concluded.

DPS says Allen joined the department in 2002. He was taken into custody Thursday night in Waller County, more than 100 miles (161 kilometers) south of where Allen was shot. He then returned to the patrol unit and the suspect fired multiple shots from a rifle at Trooper Allen, who died at the scene.

Overnight, a Hays County deputy was injured and a suspect found dead after a shooting that occurred while deputies responded to a burglary report in Wimberley, officials said. Brazos County jail records show that he was out on bond on those charges and that the bond had been recalled as insufficient due to the new charges. He's described as a black male, 5 feet 11 inches, 175 pounds. His injuries are not considered life-threatening, officials said.

"With heavy hearts on this Thanksgiving, Cecilia and I express our most honest condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of the Trooper who was callously killed today in the line of duty".
