Tillerson said that eventually there would be a day when the US and the North decide it's a good time to have that first conversation that would lead to negotiations.

Asked at a news conference in Vietnam if he could see himself being friends with Kim, the Trump replied: "That might be a odd thing to happen, but it's a possibility".

Is it a sign the administration's approach to North Korea is working, even as Washington and Pyongyang continue to exchange volleys in a war of words?

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One while making his way to Hanoi on Saturday, Mr Trump said he believed the Russian leader was being honest when he denied meddling.

It comes on the same day Rodong Sinmun, the regime-run newspaper, warned the North would "surely win in the showdown" with the United States and South Korea.

"Strange things happen in life".

US Aircraft Carriers to Start Joint Exercise in Western Pacific
As of this writing, three US aircraft carrier strike groups are gathered in the western Pacific Ocean alongside two submarines. Units assigned to the strike force will conduct coordinated operations in global waters to demonstrate the U.S.

After North Korea's Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho addressed the UN General Assembly in September Trump tweeted: "Just heard Foreign Minister of North Korea speak at UN".

"Reckless remarks by an old lunatic like Trump will never scare us or stop our advance", said the ministry.

Joseph Yun, Washington's top North Korean official, was reported by the Washington Post as saying last month that if the regime halted nuclear and missile testing for about 60 days, that would be the signal the US needs to resume direct dialogue with Pyongyang. Trump has denied that his campaign coordinated in any way with Moscow during last year's presidential campaign, and he said Saturday that Russian President Vladimir Putin again denied any involvement in trying to influence the US elections when Trump spoke with him at a regional summit in Danang, Vietnam.

The US think-tank said: "Although Pyongyang is outspent by its neighbours in dollar-to-dollar comparisons and defence experts say it operates with raging equipment and technology, the regime's forward-deployed military position and missiles aimed at Seoul ensure that Pyongyang's conventional capabilities remain a constant threat to its southern neighbour".

Trump appears to have had his feelings hurt by a statement issued by the North Korean foreign ministry referring to him as an old lunatic. "I think we have to give it a couple of months, a few months, and then see what adjustments we might need to make".

"The 28,500 US Armed Forces personnel in South Korea are vastly outnumbered by North Korean forces, as well as ROK (South Korean) forces that will conduct the overwhelming majority of the fighting", he wrote.
