Kaka, who played for Brazil, AC Milan and Real Madrid, told Brazil's Globo TV on Sunday that "my last word is that the cycle of my career as a player ends here".

A graceful midfielder, Kaka won 92 caps for Brazil, scoring 29 goals and featuring at three World Cups.

He confirmed his retirement on his official Twitter account, saying: "Father, It was much more than I could ever imagined".

Kaka began his career at Sao Paolo before earning a move to AC Milan where he won the Serie A title and the 2007 Champions League.

The legendary Brazilian also won an array of individual honours, and his 2007 Ballon d'Or title is the last time anyone other than Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo lifted football's most prestigious individual honour.

"I needed some time to think and make a very quiet decision, very calm and very conscious of what I would like for my professional life", he said. "Thank you! I'm now ready for the next journey", he posted on Twitter, alongside a picture of himself in a T-shirt labelled "I belong to Jesus".

The celestial event will stand out by the absence of bright moonlight, as the moon will be a waning crescent and barely visible. There's the Everglades, of course, but be careful if you're out in the swamp after dark to see the streaks in the sky.

"Then I asked some very close people, my parents, my brother, my girlfriend and my brother's wife".

"Milan recently made that proposal so that I had there in the day-to-day of the club".

He also indicated he could continue his post-playing career in football.

"The fact of having had successes as a professional player does not mean I will or won't be a good manager".

His four seasons in the Spanish capital were ravaged by injury, before returning to Milan in 2013 for one season, before finishing up his career Stateside with the newly formed Orlando City.
