In what has been an incredibly drawn-out transfer saga for both clubs and the fans involved, Liverpool will now be hopeful that the introduction of the Dutch defender can help them alleviate their defensive woes.

Southampton - who accused Liverpool of tapping up Van Dijk when they initially made a move for him in the summer - released a brief statement about the deal on their website.

A move to Liverpool will pose new challenges, especially given Klopp's preference for his team to commit its full-backs forward and leave the central defenders isolated.

Van Dijk is understood to have undergone a medical on Wednesday, and the Reds announced the move will be finalised when the transfer window opens on January 1. However, the bitter terms between the two clubs seem to have ended now with Klopp looking set to get his wish granted in January.

"Today is a proud day for me and my family as I join one of the biggest clubs in world football!" he said on Twitter.

The Reds are said to have been quoted a figure of £75m for the Netherlands global, £22m more than Manchester City paid to land Kyle Walker earlier this year, which they have agreed to pay in full.

Former Liverpool player Collymore is staggered at the fee.

Van Dijk is the sixth player to sign for Liverpool from Southampton since 2014, following the path taken by Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Sadio Mane, Dejan Lovren and Nathaniel Clyne.
