Plan discussed to replace Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State

Tillerson was reported in October to have privately called Trump a "moron", something the secretary of state sought to dismiss.

Tillerson, the former chief executive of Exxon Mobil, has had a testy relationship with President Trump at times.

Shortly after the news broke, Trump was peppered by reporters about the veracity of the story at the White House.

Baker and Haberman write that it is "not immediately clear whether Mr. Trump has given final approval to the plan", but that Chief of Staff John Kelly has drawn it up and widely circulated it.

Friction between the president and the nation's top diplomat has grown increasingly public through the year.

"We disagree on a couple of things", Mr. Trump has said. Their once-tense relationship has since improved, however, and one source close to the White House said he could stay longer to help spearhead legislation to improve USA infrastructure. "I serve at the appointment of the president and I am here as long as the president feels I can be useful to achieving his objectives".

Kelly Arnold, chairman of the Kansas Republican Party, says Pompeo's time as director of the Central Intelligence Agency gives a good indication of what his approach to leading the State Department might be. "Yes, sometimes, he changes his mind". The senator has advised Trump on issues like the Iran nuclear deal and immigration.

Does the president still have confidence in Tillerson?

In a major foreign policy speech on USA relations with Europe under Trump's "America First" foreign policy, Tillerson pledged that sanctions against Russian Federation will remain in place until it helps restore peace in Ukraine.

Corker "said the president quote has castrated you before the world stage", CNN's Jake Tapper said to Tillerson.

Kelle Louaillier, president of Corporate Accountability International, said that while ousting Tillerson, former CEO of ExxonMobil, might otherwise be a positive step, having Pompeo in charge of the U.S. State Department would be nothing to celebrate.

Corker on Thursday defended Tillerson. "I don't know who that is". That is giving West Wing officials pause, a source close to the White House said. Tom Cotton, R-Arkansas, could present a wrinkle in the strategy.
