Bawana fire: Leaders make beeline, CM announces ex-gratia

In a major incident that rocked the national Capital on Saturday about seventeen people are feared dead after a fire ripped through a two-storey factory in outer Delhi's Bawana industrial area this evening, a Delhi Fire Services official said. As many as fifteen fire tenders rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control, rescue operations are still underway. The cause of the fire has yet to be ascertained.

Delhi fire department officials said about 30 people working in the unit were trapped when the fire broke out around 6.20pm in the building that had a lone exit door in the front. The fire was of a make four category. The fire was reported in Sector 5 of Bawana Industrial area. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Rajneesh Gupta said a person named Manoj Jain has been apprehended. The Delhi government has ordered an inquiry into it.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said he was also keeping a close watch on rescue operations. "Several casualties reported. Monitoring the situation.Ordered enquiry".

"Learnt about a serious fire incident in a private factory at Bawana. My thoughts are with the families of the persons killed in the mishap", Harsh Vardhan said in a tweet. Ten women and seven men were killed, another fire official said, noting that a man and woman have been injured.

In a tweet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he was "deeply anguished" by the incident. The police have so far confirmed nine deaths in the fire. "As soon as the building caught fire, she jumped from the building", he said.
