Cilic will alsobe only the second player outside the "Big Four" of Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Federer to reach the Melbourne final since Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 2008 decider.

An agitated Edmund took a medical time-out after losing the first set and hobbled through the latter part of the match before surrendering meekly after a massive serve from Cilic.

Clutching at his upper leg and hip area, Nadal bravely battled on in the fourth but lost the set 6-2.

The World No 1 held set point at 5-4 before Cilic held and in the tiebreaker, a couple of Cilic misses gave Nadal his second set point which he took with an ace. He will break into the top 30 for the first time no matter what happens against Cilic. "Not for now that we are playing, but there is life after tennis", Nadal said.

The Brit relied on his powerful forehand during the tournament but some of his backhands - including a stunning two-handed effort to seal the second game of set two - were causing Cilic problems.

Angelique Kerber is the only woman still in contention who has tasted Grand Slam success, beating Serena Williams in the final in 2016 and backing it up by winning the US Open later that year.

Cilic, the 2014 US Open victor, will meet either defending champion Roger Federer or South Korean rising star Hyeon Chung for the title in Sunday night's final.

The resignations have started for USA Gymnastics
A Michigan State spokesman says Miller's comments are being looked into, and patients of Nassar's "will not be billed". Raisman shed not a single tear and showed no sign of weakness as she spoke, looking right at Nassar the entire time.

Cilic trails the Swiss ace 8-1, but leads Chung 3-0 in their meetings.

'Definitely it left some scars on his body, I can feel that too, but he's definitely got a bright future and you're going to be seeing him a lot around'.

"They're great feelings. You don't obviously play in the semi-finals of a Grand Slam every day".

"I think I played great tournament so far with my level of tennis". The match lasted about 3.5 hours.

Cilic carried his momentum into the third set and really should have won it but Nadal showed typical powers of resistance before coming through a topsy-turvy tie-break.

Serving the match, Mertens clinched it on her first opportunity with a backhand victor, then threw her arms up in the air in celebration.
