"It doesn't' surprise me that a Canadian city remains, because of the more relaxed immigration policy in Canada", said Josh Olson, a senior tech analyst with Edward Jones.

Although that criteria appeared to make the joint Triad pitch the longest of long shots, local economic developers emphasized that you can't hit a home run without taking a swing.

The courtship is getting serious for Virginia to woo Amazon to build its second world headquarters in Northern Virginia, one of 20 urban areas in North America on the short list for a project that could produce a $5 billion investment and 50,000 jobs for the victor.

The other contenders: Denver; Montgomery County, Maryland; Nashville, Tennessee; Newark, New Jersey; Northern Virginia; and Raleigh, North Carolina.

Amazon expects to make a decision this year on the location of its second headquarters.

In its bid to attract the company's attention, the Halifax Partnership, the municipality's economic development agency, created a website in November - www.amazonhfx.com- which highlights all the reasons Halifax should be considered for a second headquarters, including culture, location, economy, availability of talent and "the soul of this place".

He continued: "A post-mortem has now been carried out and the court is awaiting results of various tests that have been commissioned".

"For centuries, Newark led this nation in innovation, in invention, and in industry as one of America's premier cities", said Booker, who served as the city's mayor from 2006 to 2013. I think we're going to be more than OK without them. "Our innovation district has grown, the city has momentum, we're keeping young people, and we now have a relationship with Amazon that we didn't have before, so I think it's all good".

Premier Rachel Notley said Amazon officials told her the bids from Alberta's two biggest cities were both well received, but particularly Calgary's.

In the coming months, the company said, it will work with each of the locations to "dive deeper" into their proposals, obtain more information and evaluate how the city could accommodate Amazon's hiring plans and benefit its workers and the local community.

Halifax's full bid was kept sealed for competitive reasons but the package will be released publicly this week, Hanlon said.

The borough's Amazon proposal was centered on a 22-acre tract of property at the former landfill, a portion of which fronts on Route 206. Other contenders: Washington, D.C.; Chicago; Indianapolis; Columbus, Ohio; and Los Angeles, the only West Coast city on the list. Carlson said that significant investment can also come with growing pains. "Kansas City is going to be part of the mix", Schulte said. California Gov. Jerry Brown likely helped enhance the city's appeal with the offer of tax breaks and other incentives worth hundreds of millions of dollars should Amazon choose the California for its second home.

Hanlon said it was a great process to go through, pulling together people from different levels of government and the community, working together to showcase Halifax's strengths. Meanwhile, much of the content is already being repurposed. To the American companies we're trying to attract, it looks too heavy on energy, too light on artificial intelligence and computer science.
