Past year saw Halep miss out on several chances to become world number one before she finally scaled the rankings at the China Open in October, and she hopes she can pull off a similar feat in grand slams. She will never be remembered as a player who was ranked No. 1 in women's tennis for 85 weeks - including 67 in a row in 2011-2012 - but could not win a major title.

Halep showed her class and fight in the second set, however, biting back with a vengeance as both players exhausted with the heat. "I cried, but now I'm still smiling". Consoling herself over the loss, Simona said, "I am sad but Caroline was better than me". I was close again. In 2014, just months after losing to Serena Williams in the U.S. Open final, Wozniacki enhanced her reputation for her fitness and running by completing the New York City Marathon in a very impressive 3 hours, 26 minutes - 36 minutes longer than her Australian Open final victory in 2 hours, 50 minutes.

Wozniacki trailed by a break deep in the third set, too, against Halep before claiming the final three games.

Wozniacki will also regain the No. 1 ranking next week, six years after she previously held the top spot.

"One of the most positive things about all of this - I'm never going to get that question again", the 27-year-old Wozniacki said as she clung to the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup.

"Right now, to be honest, it's not really my aim because I just think about trying to do well here".

"I want to congratulate Simona, I know today is a tough day, I'm sorry I had to win", continued Wozniacki.

I dreamed of this moment for so many years. "I'm sorry that I had to win, but I'm sure we'll have many matches in the future", Wozniacki said. "Something I'm very proud of".

Lawsuits predicably followed as the chipmaker, along with almost every other major tech company, frantically pushed out updates to patch the vulnerability.

Halep, who became number one last October, has twice finished runner-up at the French Open, most painfully when she led the unseeded Jelena Ostapenko by a set and 3-0 in last year's final. The top seed battled on following the break, and took levelled the match with a 6-3 win.

Halep won 108 points in the match compared to Wozniacki's 110. Played players that were better than me on the day.

"I hope you enjoy this moment, thank you so much for being here and having this moment with me", she said to Lee.

Halep saved two match points and needed four of her own against 2016 champion Angelique Kerber before winning 6-3, 4-6, 9-7 in the semi-finals.

"My voice is shaking", Wozniacki said as she held the championship trophy aloft.

The world number one appeared to be receiving treatment for dizziness amid hot and humid conditions on Rod Laver Arena, and she looked to be struggling badly when resuming play. "At the same time, I think it really was a great momentum shift for me going further into the tournament after that".

Halep should have won that point, with Wozniacki scampering from one side of the court to the other just to keep the ball in play before she produced a stunning cross-court backhand that caught her opponent on the hop and led to a smashed victor.
