Cold with highest temperatures of 6 to 8 degrees in a moderate southeast wind.

While I don't usually go beyond five days, looking at the current setup, I feel there's a real possibility that this cold spell could last more than two weeks.

More specific forecasts, with colour-coded snow and ice warnings, are expected to be issued by Met Eireann in the coming days.

Power cuts may also occur and other services, such as mobile phones, may be affected.

"The air cools and moisture turns to snow, we are expecting this effect from Monday".

UK Met Office spokesman Oli Claydon said: "There is a very big, very cold pool of air that circulates around the North Pole - sudden stratospheric warming, as it says on the tin, is when the stratosphere suddenly warms", he said.

Met Office forecasters said snow showers may become persistent throughout the day Tuesday and there is the potential for travel delays.

Willian lifts Chelsea into FA Cup last 8
David Meyler had plenty of distractions as he stepped up to take a penalty against Chelsea in the FA Cup on Friday night. But for the Italian manager, it was the clean sheet which was far more important than the goals feat.

The forecaster says high pressure over Scandinavia is continuing to influence our weather with mostly dry conditions at first, but then becoming exceptionally cold and very frosty.

"It will feel much colder with a wind chill of -1 to -8C for Britain, -8 to -14C for central Europe but -15 to locally -30C for north-east and eastern Europe".

For the rest of the week, temperatures will remain cold but will rise above freezing for the rest of the week. "Where snow falls it will not thaw due to low temperatures and will settle quickly". Minimum Temperature -3 °C.

Saturday night will be dry with good clear spells and easterly winds.

Some places, particularly along exposed coastal areas, will also see blustery conditions and wintry showers of sleet and hail.

Very cold, with brisk winds and overnight frosts.
