Carolina to celebrate Black History Month with events in February

"This is what I live for now", Morris said Wednesday after an event announcing Marshall's programming for Black History Month. Our goal is to be a district that recognizes, respects, understands and learns from each individual's unique background, realizing that equality comes from tearing down boundaries and building each other up.

I am writing this letter with the hope that you will not only celebrate Black History Month this February, but also read the history and many accomplishments of Blacks right here in the Madison and Greater Madison community. He's also credited as the source of Black History Month. Often, these figures found themselves at odds with not just the law, but the very culture of the nation at the time, making their contributions all the more important.

The month serves as high time to consider the history of the Black Panther Party, from its roots as a self-defense group, to the role J. Edgar Hoover and the Federal Bureau of Investigation played in killing Fred Hampton and disbanding the Party.

"I was raised in Ottawa and I don't ever remember reading about even one person of African descent in Canada in my school textbooks", said Cadogan. If we can see further, it's because we stand on their shoulders.

Then consider that it was precisely here that the precursor to Black History Month was born, after Woodson eyed February for a celebration, as Google notes, "to commemorate the birth months of abolitionist Frederick Douglass and President Abraham Lincoln".
