Haley Hits Back at Palestinian Official Who Told Her to Shut Up

In his remarks, Mr. Abbas called for recognition of a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders "in line with worldwide law and the relevant resolutions".

In a speech before the Central Council of the Palestine Liberation Organization in January, Abbas vowed to reject USA involvement in any peace talks and strongly criticized Trump.

Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and the top administration official in charge of restarting the peace talks, and Jason Greenblatt, the top U.S. Middle East negotiator, were seated directly behind Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, for the Abbas address.

"The US stands ready to work with the Palestinian leadership. but we will not chase after you". And we say Israel must uphold its obligations as an occupying power.

In his address to the Security Council, Abbas said he would step up efforts to achieve full United Nations membership for Palestine and urged countries that have yet to recognise it to do so.

But Abbas - who left the room after addressing the council - was not present to hear Haley's comments. "The choice is yours, Mister President", said Haley to Abbas.

"Abbas said nothing new", Netanyahu scoffed. I assure you that path will get the Palestinian people exactly nowhere.

Abbas also called for an global conference in 2018 as part of the peace plan, in part to determine recognition of the Palestinian state as a regular member state of the UN.

"I expected Mr. Abbas to stay with us and have a dialogue, unfortunately he's once again running away", Israel's ambassador to the UN Danny Danon said.

Abbas also denied that the Palestinians engage in terrorism and incitement to violence, saying his people are "committed to fostering a culture of peace and rejection of violence", and their goal "is one thing only: fighting terrorism". "Is it for the two-state solution or the one-state solution?" he added.

The issue of Jerusalem goes to the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"Mr. Abbas, you have made it clear with your words and with your actions that you are no longer part of the solution", he said.

Meanwhile, Nickolay Mladenov, the UN's Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, warned that ongoing Israeli settlement construction was corroding the possibility a Palestinian state's formation.

The European Union in October urged the Israeli regime to stop plans for the construction of new settler units in the occupied West Bank, warning that such moves undermine peace efforts.

In some sense, the response to Abbas's remarks reflects the degree to which USA relations with the Palestinians have deteriorated since Trump announced his decision to recognize Jerusalem.

"We have expressed our absolute readiness to reach an historic peace agreement", he said.

That vote in the 193-nation assembly came after 14 of the 15 council members voted in favor of a similar measure.

ABBAS: (Through interpreter) Israel is acting as a state above the law.

The United Nations granted Palestine the status of a non-member observer state in 1992, but an upgrade to full membership would require unanimous backing from the Security Council - an unlikely outcome, given the near-certainly of a USA veto.
