A 12-year-old girl arrested in connection with a school shooting Thursday afternoon after wounding two students with a gun she thought was a toy, a witness said.

The girl has been booked on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm and bringing a loaded firearm onto a school campus, Arcos said.

A 15-year-old boy was also shot in the head, and doctors said that it doesn't appear to be life-threatening.

The three other victims, a 30-year-old woman, a 12-year-old girl, and an 11-year-old boy, all suffered minor injuries, including two from gunshots.

"We had some type of a shooting occurrence inside a classroom", said L.A. School Police Chief Steve Zipperman during a press briefing at the scene.

Dr Aaron Strumwasser, at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, said: "I think he will do fine..."

"She doesn't do bad things, she just stays quiet", he added. She said she had been texting her daughter, but hadn't heard back.

"I just saw something pop", she said.

Reported plan for government wireless network gets panned
The first option says the government can pay for and build the single 5G network , without the consultation of private companies. The US government could build its own super-fast 5G network in a bid to counter security threats from China and other countries.

A total of 14 shootings have occurred on school campuses across the United States in 2018 as of Thursday, according to Everytown for Gun Safety, a non-profit organization committed to measuring USA gun violence with comprehensive and up-to-date data.

Between 2000 and 2013, almost 17 per cent of 160 so-called active shooter incidents in the U.S. were in elementary, middle or high schools, according to a Federal Bureau of Investigation report.

"There were numerous kids that ran and other kids that may have left the classroom", Zipperman said. TV video from helicopters showed a dark-haired girl in a sweatshirt being led from the school in handcuffs as anxious parents and family members gathered on a street corner, many crying and talking on their phones as they waited.

Maria Serrano reluctantly dropped off her 12-year-old daughter at school.

The shooting, which took place in an elective class with children of different ages, was the latest outbreak of gun violence at a United States school. "I didn't think something like this would happen here".

Mr Im declined to say if investigators believed the girl deliberately opened fire at Salvador Castro Middle School, near the city's downtown district, on Thursday.

The Los Angeles Unified School District is the only district its size that requires every middle- and high-school campus to conduct daily random searches for weapons using metal-detecting wands. "The school has been declared safe, and we are communicating with parents of students at Castro Middle School, as well as neighboring campuses".
