"He's outgrown Leicester, he's too good for Leicester", Murphy concluded, adding that he believed Mahrez is a Champions League player.

Manchester City pulled out of the deal as they were unwilling to match Leicester's valuation of the player, which Press Association Sport understands to be £80million, so Mahrez, who has two and a half years remaining on his contract, will remain at the King Power Stadium at least until the end of the season.

The 26-year-old was due at the club's Belvoir Drive training ground on Thursday but stayed away, having failed to show on Tuesday - the day before deadline day - and Wednesday.

He added: "I will assess Riyad when he's cleared his head". Sky claims Mahrez is "depressed" about Leicester's decision not to accept City's final bid, and has informed his club that "he is not strong enough to play football at the moment".

"For Riyad, he can clear his head and he can come back with us because he is a very big player for us", said Puel.

'Riyad Mahrez will be in turmoil after being denied his dream move to Manchester City - and I don't blame him, ' he explained in a Mirror column. "It will be dealt with inside the club and not in public". It is important now to move on and to keep our focus on the pitch.

Reintegrating Mahrez into the squad will be a challenge for Puel, with reports that Leicester players are unhappy with their team-mate for submitting a transfer request and trying to force a move to City.

"All the staff, especially all the squad, they are his friends".
