With Duke, Clemson and North Carolina also included, the ACC comprised 25 percent of the top 16.

The committee rated Michigan State a No. 3 seed in its midseason bracket reveal on Sunday afternoon. If they Spartans win out to finish their regular season and then go on to win the Big Ten Tournament, they would improve their case to be a top-2 seed or better in the 2018 NCAA Tournament.

Virginia may not be the No. 1 team in the nation when the Associated Press poll is released on Monday, but the Cavaliers are No. 1 where it counts.

Virginia was the top overall seed in preliminary NCAA Tournament rankings released on Sunday, a day after losing to the Hokies.

Auburn, Kansas, Duke and Cincinnati were the No. 2 seeds. "They have a great strength of schedule and they're 10-1 from home".

Virginia leads the ACC race by two games in the loss column over Clemson (9-3) and resumes league competition Tuesday at Miami. Xavier was the third No. 1 seed (Midwest Region) and Purdue, which lost twice this week, was the fourth No. 1 seed (West Region).

The Tigers are now the No. 9 overall team, according to the committee, and are projected as the top No. 3 seed, playing in the Midwest Region. If those seeds held, Xavier would get preference for the Midwest Region in Omaha because it is the higher seed.

Numerous top seeds have suffered recent losses, but those were balanced out by key wins early in the season. The No. 4 seeds are Tennessee, Ohio State, Arizona and Oklahoma.

"The committee was pretty strong in its consensus of the No. 1 teams, but there was a lot of dialogue all the way through the first quadrant because the teams are so close", Rasmussen said.
