Officer slain, deputies wounded, suspect dead near Atlanta

A police officer and two sheriff's deputies were shot Friday morning in Locust Grove, Ga., south of Atlanta, and the suspect in the shooting was killed, authorities say.

Locust Grove Elementary School has been placed on lockdown as a precaution, reported Fox 5.

After talking with the person who they wanted to arrest, deputies called dispatch for backup and the Locust Grove officer arrived minutes later.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation told WAGA-TV they were responding to the scene.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation late Friday said that Henry County deputies Michael D. Corley and Ralph Sidwell "Sid" Callaway were wounded in the gunfire.

"I heard all the sirens and I came from behind the house and I saw all the police officers rolling through", another neighbor told Fernandes. The other deputy's vest stopped the bullet, and he was listed in fair condition. "We just need a lot of prayers for he and his wife and the baby that's coming into this world without a daddy because of somebody." the mayor said, choking up. The other deputy continues to recover from his injuries.

Henry County Sheriff Keith McBrayer announced the death at an afternoon news conference.

Police blocked off the subdivision and were not letting those who don't live there enter.

The Locust Grove officer was shot and killed at the scene.
